ALMA IS GOING TO THE BIRDS!

When birds migrate between nesting and wintering sites, they don’t just stop anywhere; they rely on a handful of resource-rich and strategically located sites where they increase their body weight as they acquire the energy-rich fat stores needed to fly thousands of miles across continents and oceans. These places are known as stopover sites.  Alma, Wisconsin is well known as a stopover site, where birds stop while traveling along The Mississippi Flyway.

Environment for the Americas and the City of Alma, Wisconsin invite you to join our celebration of the importance of stopover sites and their habitats for migratory birds.  Whether you learn about a stopover site near your home, visit one far away or create a safe place for birds in your backyard, your support can mean a safe journey for a migratory bird.  Join the celebration!

Plan your springtime travel around Great River Birding Month and visit Alma, Wisconsin.  We're celebrating the entire month of May, our shops are each sponsoring a migratory bird throughout the month.  On Saturday, May 13th, enjoy the Great River Birding Festival as Alma, Wisconsin celebrates International Migratory Bird Day.

As birds journey between breeding and non-breeding sites, Alma, Wisconsin is celebrating the importance of the places and habitats where they stop to rest and refuel.  Many fly over 2,500 miles between Central & South America, where they winter, to the United States & Canada, where they will nest and raise young. Let's help them along the way!
