The Alma Area Chamber Of Commerce promotes Alma from the "local" perspective ... the Alma Tourism Council uses lodging taxes to promote Alma from the "regional, statewide and national" perspective.  The Chamber focuses on the following areas:

  • Earned Media comes our way without paid effort on our part generating great economic value at no out-of-pocket cost.  Through press releases and engagement with media outlets we can increase the presence and visibility of Alma, Wisconsin.  A news story is often picked up by a magazine or newspaper based on a press release or information about an event.  Our association with the Wisconsin Great River Road generates a great deal of unearned media.

  • Paid Media through advertising of local events in local and regional news outlets are used on a limited basis for Chamber-sponsored activities.  For example, we place advertising to support the Alma Music & Arts Festival and Christmas In Alma events.

  • Social Media includes our Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and our core informational website at www.almawisconsin.com.  This is the Chamber's primary promotion outreach effort.  Often we create promotional campaigns to highlight an event or a season.  All of this work is contributed on a volunteer basis by our membership.  Our intent is to reach both the traveler and the local resident with relevant up-to-date information on events and activities in the Alma area. 
EARNED MEDIA

Earned Media (or free media) refers to publicity gained through promotional efforts other than advertising, as opposed to paid media, which refers to publicity gained through advertising.   Earned media often refers specifically to publicity gained through editorial influence. 

 

Earned media includes mass media outlets, such as newspaper, television, radio, and the Internet (eg, online articles, blogs, etc.), and may include a variety of formats.  Critically, earned media cannot be bought or owned, it can only be gained organically, hence the term 'earned'.  It does not include publicity gained through social media, particularly on the Internet with outlets like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others.


For the third year in a row Alma, Wisconsin was highlighted in Midwest Living's
Best Of The Midwest Travel ... this is a prime example of "earned media".
PAID MEDIA
The Alma Area Chamber of Commerce does limited Paid Advertising, relying on the Alma Tourism Commission and their use of revenues from taxes on lodging to support paid advertising.  Examples of advertising purchased by the Chamber in the last year are provided below.
WISCONSIN GREAT RIVER ROAD TRAVEL & VISITOR GUIDE offers a specific Buffalo County advertising section. Each year the Alma Area Chamber Of Commerce and the Wings Over Alma Nature & Art Center share the cost of this 1/8th page ad.

Many local Alma & Buffalo County businesses also advertise in this Visitor Guide.
PROMOTION POSTCARD used exclusively at Nelson Cheese Factory in Nelson WI.  Hundreds of thousands of visitors stop at the Cheese Factory each year and many pick up local travel information.  Our challenge and the purpose of this card is to encourage the traveler to continue traveling south just 9 miles to Alma, Wisconsin.


CHRISTMAS ADVERTISING was placed in the Winona Daily News to encourage seasonal shopping.  Several Alma businesses advertised in this issue.
WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA
Over 15 years ago the Alma Area Chamber Of Commerce created a Website (www.almawisconsin.com) promoting the City as a travel destination while also promoting community events.  With the advent of Social Media two Facebook pages are also maintained as community outreach, both feed directly into Twitter accounts.
